A Magnet For Business

Manchester is the capital of the North of England. It is one of England's major financial centres with an industrial, commercial and educational character.
The Industrial Revolution in the 18th and 19th century brought prosperity and transformed the region into a major urban centre. Once little more than a village, Manchester became one of the world's cotton manufacturing centres and became known as Cottonopolis (city of cotton). After the engineering of the Bridgewater Canal, the town's first working canal, in 1761 and the completion of the Manchester Ship Canal in 1894, the city attracted a variety of enterprises ranging from watchmakers and tea dealers to iron foundries. Since then, Manchester has constantly been a magnet to enterprises and industries and is becoming the strongest financial centre outside of London. Opportunities in industries as varied as advertising, commerce, finance, media, retail, science, technology and culture are rivalling their London counterparts.
A Haven For Students

Manchester counts three educational establishments, namely the University of Manchester, the Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Salford, and has the country's largest student population outside London. Manchester University is rated among the best establishments in the United Kingdom and is a distinguished research centre. The University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), which is now part of Manchester University, is the oldest technological university in Britain. There are many other educational establishments in Manchester, including the Royal College of Music, the Manchester Business School, the City College and the Manchester College of Arts and Technology.
